Every two years, Albacore sailors from Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom come together for their International Championships, a fierce on water competition rivalled only by the fierce off water camaraderie.

Laurent Hay, from France, has won the Spanish Open Finn Championship in Ibiza, Spain. Christoph Burger, from Switzerland, took second with Xavier Penas from Spain in third. Penas won the Spanish Championship from David Terol and Alejandro Cardona.

Given the mist and 1mph winds forecast for Saturday, there was some trepidation amongst the sailors planning to take part in Horning Sailing Club’s Autumn Passage Race, now in its third year. Despite this, some 47 boats arrived.

The name ‘400 Islands Race’ alone suggests challenging ocean sailing. In fact, the race starts in Kiel, circles (almost) all of the Danish Baltic Sea islands and returns to Kiel.

There was an excellent entry of forty-four skippers including many of the top ranked skippers seeking qualification for the Worlds next year.

This year was marked by the return of participants from England, including Nick and Catherine Heath from Cambridge SC,, as well as two new crews, Duncan Matthew and John Chalker from Aldeburgh YC, and Richard Hope and Jeremy Arnoco from Draycote Water SC.

The West Oxfordshire Sailing Club Firefly Open, part of the 2025 Firefly Class ‘Vines’ Travellers Series, was held on 18-19 October in conditions that could politely be described as “two entirely different sports”.
